Increasing Diversity in Genetic Counseling

A network to support prospective Black genetic counselors into the profession.

GOLDEN: Genetics Opportunities, Learning, Development, and Empowerment Network

The Genetics Opportunities, Learning, Development, and Empowerment Network (GOLDEN) is dedicated to increasing the awareness of genetic counseling among Black students, primarily at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). For prospective genetic counselors, GOLDEN also provides mentorship throughout the graduate school application process.

What we do

Founded in 2020, our organization is rooted in a deep commitment to increasing diversity in the genetic counseling profession through outreach, and development of prospective Black/African-American genetic counseling students.

Shaping a diverse workforce in genetic counseling

Whether it’s participating in HBCU undergraduate pre-professional panels or hosting “Hot Topics’ meetings to discuss emerging issues in the field, our goal remains the same: to increase awareness of genetic counseling as a career path among Black undergraduate students.

By increasing the number of Black genetic counseling graduate school applicants, we hope to make a meaningful impact on the profession by creating a more diverse workforce that is representative of our patient and client population.

We invite you to join us on this journey towards a brighter, more inclusive future. We hope we inspire you to pursue a career in genetic counseling.
